Drops title as prohibitive favorite Chimaev lost his middleweight championship to Sean Strickland via split decision (47-48, 48-47, 47-48) at UFC 328 on Saturday in Newark.
Impact The first round started like so many others for Chimaev, as the Chechen fighter instantly pressured his opponent to the cage and secured a takedown. Strickland was able to scramble and keep himself safe, forcing the champion to expend energy on mat returns and reestablishing position. This led to an unfamiliar sight in Round 2, as Chimaev flopped to his back after a bad shot attempt, clearly content to rest as Strickland rode out the clock in his closed guard. To his credit, Chimaev never stopped coming forward and throwing big punches, but the volume was soundly on the side of Strickland, as was the crispness of the shots overall. When all is said and done, Chimaev may go down as the best one-round fighter the sport has ever seen, but he has always had cardio trouble after the first five minutes, which may indicate that light heavyweight is where he truly belongs. Chimaev parted with his undefeated record along with his belt, falling to 15-0-1 in professional MMA due to the loss
