Submitted as hefty favorite Gastelum lost to Vicente Luque via submission (anaconda choke) at 4:08 of Round 1 at UFC 327 on Saturday in Miami.

Impact It goes without saying that Gastelum can't afford to be suffering first-round submission losses as a -275 favorite at this stage of his career. Kelvin looked great early on, battering Luque on the feet and picking up an easy takedown, but he got dropped with a short shot and was never able to recover. It was the fourth submission loss of his career. Kelvin has still never been knocked out as a pro. Set to turn 35 years old in October, Gastelum has alternated losses and wins in last seven fights dating back to August 2021. That's obviously not going to get the job done.

Stepping in for Daukaus Gastelum will fight Vicente Luque at UFC 327 on April 11, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.

Impact The 34-year-old will be replacing Kyle Daukaus, who was forced to withdraw from the fight for unknown reasons. Gastelum has alternated wins and losses over his last six fights, but he may be able to break that pattern in April while facing an opponent who has lost two fights in a row and three of his last four.

Takes decision after weight miss Gastelum defeated Dustin Stoltzfus via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Noche on Saturday in San Antonio.

Impact It has reached the point in which any good work Gastelum does inside the octagon is totally negated by his weight management issues. His five-pound miss prior to this fight was arguably his most egregious to date. It also cost him 35 percent of his purse. Kelvin undoubtedly landed the much more damaging strikes, with his Round 2 knockdown of Stoltzfus being by far the biggest moment of the fight. Dustin kept trying to work his way back into the fight, but Kelvin had the answer. Set to turn 34 years of age in late October and sporting a .500 record dating back to August 2021, the UFC seems unlikely to have much tolerance for Gastelum's antics moving forward.

Impact Gastelum is coming off a loss at the hands of Joe Pyfer back in June. That dropped his UFC record to 13-10, and he'll be looking to pick up his first win since 2024 against Stoltzfus. Gastelum is the more experienced fighter, but he gives up three inches of height and reach to Stoltzfus.

Impact The fact Gastelum was able to survive Round 1, let alone have enough energy to win Round 3 is amazing. Sadly, he did nowhere near enough offensively to take a decision. Known as one of the must durable fighters in the history of the sport, Kelvin survived a pair of knockdowns in the opening frame. He was considerably more competitive as the fight progressed, but part of that was the result of Pyfer's baffling inactivity. It's not as if Gastelum floored the gas pedal. Set to turn 34 years of age in late October, Kelvin has alternated wins and losses in his past four fights. If the UFC isn't going to be careful regarding the level of opponent they match him up against, and there's no evidence that will be the case, Gastelum is likely to hover around the .500 mark moving forward.
