Retires following latest loss Barboza lost to Esteban Ribovics via TKO (punches) at 1:32 of Round 2 at UFC 330 on Saturday in Philadelphia. He announced his retirement after the bout.

Impact Barboza didn't outright announce this would be his retirement fight entering the evening, but you could tell it was coming considering he was crying and hugging his family during his walk to the octagon. To his credit, Edson attempted to go out on his shield, engaging Ribovics in what was predictably a wild, one-sided brawl. He never went down, instead being mercifully and correctly saved by referee Herb Dean about 90 seconds into Round 2. The 40-year-old made his UFC debut at UFC 123 on November 20, 2010. That card was headlined by Rampage Jackson and Lyoto Machida. Barboza ends his run with the company with an 18-15 mark, including wins over the likes of Paul Felder, Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez, and Dan Hooker. It was a heck of a run.

Scheduled to face Ribovics Barboza will face Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 on Aug. 15, Marcel Dorff of Heavy on Sports reports.

Impact Barboza vs Ribovics will be the latest chapter of a multi-sport Argentina vs Brazil rivalry, and this time, it'll happen inside the octagon. Barboza will look to bounce back in his first fight of the year, as his most recent fight saw him lose to Jalin Turner via TKO in the first round on Dec. 6 last year. Barboza could be on the verge of a release if he loses this bout. He has lost each of his past three bouts and hasn't won a fight since Oct. 2023.

Impact The UFC continues to insert the soon-to-be 40-year-old Barboza into difficult fights and everyone involved in the process continues to pay the price. Edson was a +390 underdog here against Turner and was never able to get out of first gear. He was busted open early by a huge elbow from his opponent and absorbed a whopping 39 significant strikes in total in a shade over two minutes. Barboza, a one-dimensional kickboxer, simply doesn't defend well enough to compete at this level at this late stage of his career. He's lost three in a row and is without a victory dating back to October 2023.

Impact Barboza has lost each of his last two fights and four of his last six bouts following a loss to Drakkar Klose in August. The 39-year-old will now aim to get back on track against Turner, who hasn't won a fight in nearly two years.

Impact It was an odd performance by Barboza, who got stung by the same overhand right repeatedly before being held in the clinch. The veteran was able to put together a nice third round as Klose wore down, but the urgency to close the show was nowhere to be found. "Junior" still has some of the best kicks in the division, but this feels like a fight he would have won three years ago, which raises questions as to how long the 39-year-old can compete at this level. Barboza falls to 24-13-0 in professional MMA as a result of the loss.
