Finished as hefty underdog Garbrandt lost to Adrian Yanez via TKO (strikes) at 2:47 of Round 1 at UFC 329 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Impact Garbrandt took his gloves off immediately after the fight and held them in his hand as the decision was announced, but he didn't get to speak afterwards so it's not clear if he is officially retiring or not. It would certainly appear to be the sensible move. Cody went for broke here for about a minute. He landed a couple nice blows, but nothing that truly threatened Yanez. Once the momentum swung back the other way, he predictably crumbled. Now 35 years old, Garbrandt fell apart after winning the UFC Bantamweight Championship from Dominick Cruz back in December 2016. He went on to lose his next three fights and is sporting a 4-8 mark in his past dozen bouts. A boatload of injuries and the inability to fight with any regularity didn't help matters. The end is approaching, even if it isn't here yet.

Impact Garbrandt is an experienced UFC fighter, sporting a 10-7 record in the promotion. His last time in the Octagon, he bested Long Xiao via unanimous decision back in March. He'll look to stack his second straight victory come early July.

Impact It was another bleak performance for Garbrandt, the end result aside. Cody was well on his way to his third straight defeat. He was absorbing too much damage, particularly in the form of low kicks, before a pair of foolish decisions from Xiao changed the course of the fight. Garbrandt absorbed two low blows in Round 3, one of which left him vomiting in a bucket inside the octagon. Referee Herb Dean had no choice but to dock Xiao points on back-to-back occasions, leading to Garbrandt somehow winning 28-27 on all three scorecards. Cody will be 35 years of age in July and has dealt with a ton of injuries over the year. He appears to be just about toast, although his roster spot is going to be secure considering he won here. The UFC typically gives former champions more leeway towards the entire of their careers than they probably should.

Impact It was the type of uneven performance we have become accustomed to from Garbrandt in the latter stages of his career. Displaying one-round cardio, Cody was effective for five minutes before the tide of the bout turned. Garbrandt did a good job of staying upright, stuff 10-of-11 Barcelos takedown attempts, but he didn't appear to have the energy to string together combinations over the course of the final two rounds, constantly getting outworked in all positions. When the final bell rang, it was clear he'd be dropping a decision. Garbrandt is somehow still just 33 years old, but he has just a pair of wins in the past five-plus years, going 2-4 in that span. Time appears to be just about up.
