Drops decision to Ricky Simon Smotherman lost to Ricky Simon via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Atlanta.

Impact Smotherman was truly awful in a unanimous decision defeat to Serhiy Sidey in early May. He accepted a quick turnaround here against Simon following the withdrawal of Charles Jourdain (undisclosed) and again struggled, although this time it came as a +350 underdog. It's quite clear at this point that Smotherman has no defensive grappling to speak of. He allowed three takedowns to Simon, good for 9:13 worth of control time. If he wasn't flat on his back, he was being pinned up along the fence. Smotherman has some pop in his hands, but he simply doesn't have the secondary skills to allow him to get to it. He looks nothing like the guy that defeated Jake Hadley via unanimous decision in his UFC debut last October.

Not competitive in Des Moines Smotherman lost to Serhiy Sidey via unanimous decision (27-30, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Impact Smotherman looked quite good in his UFC debut in October, a unanimous decision, late-notice win over Jake Hadley. He had a full camp under his belt for this matchup against Sidey and was awful. Smotherman was either unable or unwilling to engage his opponent with any regularity. He appeared hesitant to let his hands go and was constantly defending takedown attempts. He gave up five on a dozen tries, leading to 4:12 worth of control time for Sidey. The terrible effort comes on the heels of Smotherman spending an extended time in Mexico training with Diego Lopes and crew. None if it bodes well for the 27-year-old Texan moving forward.
