White: Conor McGregor to face Jose Aldo for title if he wins in Boston
The biggest featherweight title fight in history will go down later this year if Conor McGregor gets past Dennis Siver on Jan. 18 in Boston.
UFC president Dana White confirmed Thursday that McGregor will meet featherweight champion Jose Aldo next if he wins his fifth straight fight since joining the UFC.
"This fight in Boston, if he wins this fight, he's going to fight for the title. I don't know where yet," White confirmed.
Asked if the fight could take place in McGregor's native Ireland, and if there's any truth to rumors of a massive soccer stadium show in May, White allowed a small smile to creep across his face and called the idea "interesting." He wasn't ready to confirm any more, but said "yes" when asked whether McGregor could sell out a stadium — even "a 90,000-seat arena."
White said the upcoming UFC Fight Night card at the TD Garden Arena in Boston is nearing a sellout with McGregor headlining.
Should McGregor win that fight, a fight with Aldo for the featherweight title "will be the biggest fight that division's ever had, and it will be the biggest payday Aldo's ever had," White said.
White believes McGregor is the exact kind of opponent Aldo needs to push him into the stratosphere of his career, but first things first — McGregor has to get past Siver on Jan. 18. Until then, White's not going to start making any travel plans, because if McGregor loses, then the entire scenario changes.
