UFC to induct Jeff Blatnick and Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg 2 into Hall of Fame

Published May. 20, 2015 8:20 p.m. ET

The UFC has confirmed the first two members of the Hall of Fame class for 2015 with former commentator Jeff Blatnick being inducted into the new contributor's wing while the classic rematch between Matt Hughes and Frank Trigg will enter into the fight wing.

Both inductees were announced on Wednesday night's edition of UFC Tonight.

The UFC Hall of Fame was recently reformatted into four separate categories for inductees -- pioneers, modern era, contributors and fights -- with at least one member being introduced into each of the new areas for the next three years through 2017.

The UFC will posthumously enter Blatnick into the Hall of Fame after the former Olympic gold medalist in wrestling passed away in 2012.

Blatnick was a vital part of the UFC's history where he worked as a commentator from UFC 4 through UFC 32 and he also helped to develop the rules and judging criteria that were eventually adapted into the modern regulations for mixed martial arts across the world.

Blatnick also coined the phrase 'mixed martial arts' to avoid using the worlds 'no holds barred', which is how the sport was described in its earliest inception.

Blatnick's contributions are countless and he will go down in history as one of the first people to champion mixed martial arts to the mainstream.

In addition to Blatnick's induction, the UFC 52 rematch between former welterweight champion (and UFC Hall of Fame member) Matt Hughes and Frank Trigg will also be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

The bout is still considered one of the greatest comebacks in MMA history after a heated rivalry erupted between Hughes and Trigg in the lead up to the fight.

The fight lasted just over four minutes, but in that span of time Trigg caught Hughes with a shot that he believed was low but the referee didn't see it and the action continued. Trigg pounded away at Hughes and even looked for a rear naked choke, but just couldn't get the finish.

Miraculously, Hughes found a way out and recovered in just a matter of moments before he picked Trigg up and slammed him back down on the ground. Hughes kept pressuring Trigg until he locked up a rear naked choke to win the fight and defend his UFC welterweight title.

In addition to the two inductees, the UFC will also enter two more into the Hall of Fame from the pioneer era (fighters who debuted before November 17, 2000) and the modern era (fighters who debuted after that same date). Those names will be announced at a later date.

The UFC Hall of Fame class of 2015 will be inducted during International Fight Week in Las Vegas in the lead up to UFC 189: Aldo vs. McGregor on July 11.
