UFC targeting Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Michael Johnson for UFC 205
UFC officials are looking to book a lightweight fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Michael Johnson for UFC 205 in New York City
Khabib Nurmagomedov is not a happy camper.
On day removed from the announcement that Conor McGregor, not Nurmagomedov, will be challenge Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205, the UFC revealed they are now targeting a matchup between the Dagastani and Michael Johnson on the same card.
UFC president Dana White announced the potential booking on Tuesday’s edition of SportsCenter.
“Khabib was also supposed to get a title fight at 155 pounds,” revealed White. “Khabib called and says, ‘Alright, I get it. Conor is getting this fight? Put me on New York, too.’ So, he wants to fight Michael Johnson.”
Nurmagomedov (23-0), a Sambo world champion, is currently riding a seven fight win streak inside the Octagon. In his most recent effort, “The Eagle” decimated Darrell Horcher en route to a second round TKO at UFC on FOX 19 this past April.
This win marked his first appearance inside the Octagon since defeating Dos Anjos in April 2014. Following this win a myriad of health related setbacks, including two knee injuries and some broken ribs, forced Nurmagomedov to watch the 155-pound unfold from the sideline. The Dagestani also holds notable wins over Abel Trujillo, Gleison Tibau and Thiago Tavares.
Johnson (17-10), a veteran of season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter, is coming off back-to-back decision losses to Nate Diaz and Beneil Darius. Both Diaz and Johnson earned Fight of the Night for their performance.
‘The Menace’ previously earned four straight wins inside the Octagon, which included decisions over mixed martial arts veteran Joe Lauzon and standout striker Edson Barboza. He will enter this bout with nine career stoppage wins, including seven by way of (T)KO.
UFC 205 will go down on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This historic event will mark the UFC’s first event in New York. The supefight between McGregor and Alvarez will serve as the main event.
