UFC hires former Legacy FC owner Mick Maynard, promotes Sean Shelby
On Tuesday, UFC official announced the hiring of Mick Maynard as the new Vice President of Talent Relations. Maynard was President and owner of Houston-based Legacy Fighting Championship, the organization that launched the careers of Holly Holm, Henry Cejudo and Sage Northcutt.
Maynard will work alongside Sean Shelby, a 14-year UFC employee who is being promoted to Senior Vice President of Talent Relations, in serving as the official matchmaker for the UFC, developing athletes on the roster and scouting potential talent around the world.
“I’m excited to have Mick on board working alongside Sean,” said UFC President Dana White in a press release. “Mick has become one of the most respected people in the fight game and he’s done a great job in finding and developing talent. Sean has been a tremendous asset to the UFC for a long time, and I look forward to working with Sean and Mick in the years to come.”
Maynard, who began promoting mixed martial arts in 2006, revealed he is excited by the challenge of joining the world’s most prominent MMA promotion.
“This is an incredible opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to delivering the action-packed, exciting fights that UFC fans have come to expect,” said Maynard.
These changes came as a result of longtime matchmaker Joe Silva announcing his plans to retire from the position he held for 21 years at the end of the 2016.
“Joe Silva’s contributions to the UFC over the last 20 years were huge and he played a big role in helping make the sport as big as it is today,” said UFC President Dana White in a press release. “He left his mark on this sport and I wish him nothing but success in retirement.”
Silva’s departure comes a little over a month after the announcement of UFC’s sale to media conglomerate WME-IMG for more than $4 billion. According to the reports, Silva made a heavy profit, resulting in his desire to spend more time with his family.
