UFC 208: Ryan LaFlare gets the win over Roan Carneiro

UFC 208: Ryan LaFlare vs. Roan Carneiro fight recap:

UFC Welterweights Ryan LaFlare & Roan Carneiro kicked off UFC 208 as the first fight of the night. Live from the sold out Barclay’s centre in Brooklyn New York, UFC President Dana White said beforehand that the event had achieved a $2 million-plus gate.

The event had taken a slight hit though, with two bouts being cancelled in the space of just 48 hours. The heavyweight bout between Marcin Tybura and Justin Willis was the first bout to be cancelled due to a medical problem with Willis and his weight cut deeming him unfit to compete.

Next was Ian McCall vs Jarred Brooks, on the very day of the event. Ian McCall has had bad luck recently with making it to the octagon and had once again taken ill. He was also deemed unfit to compete. This then resulted to a later start time with just one fight on UFC Fight Past Prelims.

Fighting out of his hometown, Ryan LaFlare was 12-1 going into this bout. Coming off a decision win over Mike Pierce at The TUF 22 Finale in December 2015, LaFlare had been out for just over a year due to injuries. Previous to his last fight, LaFlare had suffered his first lost by decision to top UFC Welterweight contender Demian Maia in the main event at UFC Fight Night 62 back in March 2015.

Roan Carneiro entered the bout with a record of 21-10. Carneiro recently returned for the second time to the UFC back in 2015 with a win over Mark Munoz by first round submission. He entered the UFC competing at the Middleweight division but after losing to Derek Brunson by first round KO, Carneiro dropped down to Welterweight. He won his latest bout by split decision over Kenny Robertson at UFC Fight Night 94 back in September.

Round One:

Both fighters touch gloves. LaFlare throws a body kick and lands. Carneiro returns with a body kick of his own. LaFlare backs Carneiro against the cage and closes the distance. He throws another body kick and gets Carneiro in the clinch up against the cage. They make their way back to the center of the octagon.

Carneiro lands a punch and they clinch for a short moment. Next comes an inside leg kick from Carneiro, he takes LaFalare down but pulls guard. LaFlare is in half guard but they get back to their feet. Carneiro and LaFlare clinch, Carneiro gets LaFlare up against the cage but LaFlare escapes and comes another inside leg kick by Carneiro.

Round Two:

LaFlare comes out and pushes Carneiro up against the cage and pressures with leg kicks. LaFlare catches Carneiro with a left hook. Carneiro slips and ends up on his back with LaFlare in his guard. LaFlare pressures Carneiro up against the cage. LaFlare lands elbows before they both end up back on their feet.

LaFlare continues to pressure forward, level changes and attempts a take down. He catches Carneiro with a straight left, Carneiro ends up on his back with LaFlare ending up in his guard once again. LaFlare switches to half guard, landing punches to the body of Carneiro. LaFlare is unable to posture up and Carneiro escapes. They end the round with a short exchange on the feet.

Round Three:

They touch gloves. LaFlare hits Carneiro with a straight left and pushes forward. Carneiro misses a combination of punches. Carneiro hits his head on a camera. They both get into an exchange and end up on the mat before standing back up shortly after. LaFlare lands a high kick and they clinch up against the cage. LaFlare hits Carneiro with a combination.

Carneiro attempts a single leg, they clinch and LaFlare trips Carneiro but he ends up on top and attempts a kimora. Carneiro in half guard, landing elbows to the body of LaFlare. Carneiro gets full mount, attempts to posture up and lands some ground and pound.

LaFlare applied pressure from the start pushing the pace and moving forward landing multiple kicks and takedowns. He managed to defend all of Carneiro’s take downs apart from the very last. An emotional Laflare got on the mic after to thank his hometown, his first time fighting in New York.

LaFlare gets the win by unanimous decision. The official score 30-26, 30-27, 29-28
