UFC 206: Daniel Cormier to Defend Title Against Anthony Johnson

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

UFC 206 has added its first big fight, as Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson will give it another go, with Cormier holding the title this time around.

Daniel Cormier emphatically announced the bout on UFC Tonight.

The first battle between Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier lasted an incredible two and a half rounds. After “Rumble” knocked down Cormier in the opening seconds, the Olympian did his best to take the fight to the canvas, and he was successful.

Cormier drained the energy of Johnson with consistent takedowns and suffocating pressure. However, the heavy-handed Johnson always seemed to be one strike away from ending the bout when the fight was on the feet. Cormier eventually submitted his exhausted opponent in the third round.

Since that bout in May of last year, Cormier defended his title successfully in an epic five-round war against Alexander Gustafsson, then defeated the legendary Anderson Silva in a non-title bout this Summer.

Anthony Johnson has barrelled through top contenders to get back to title contention, knocking out Ryan Bader, Jimi Manuwa, and most recently Glover Teixeira. The Teixeira knockout was a lightening fast 13-second starching in August.

One interesting aspect of the announcement was the fact that it was not named the main event. A light heavyweight title fight almost always warrants a headlining slot. So you have to wonder who the promotion could have in mind for the Toronto main event. Georges St. Pierre perhaps?

The UFC has claimed that the show will go on with or without GSP. Let’s hope that he’ll be a part of it though.

UFC 206 will take place on December 10 from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada. In addition to the light heavyweight title fight, the officially announced bouts for the card are as follows:
