UFC 205: McGregor, Woodley, Thompson, and Romero Earn Honors

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Conor McGregor and Yoel Romero received Performance of the Night awards, while Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson earned Fight of the Night for UFC 205.

UFC 205 in New York City lived up to the hype as we saw plenty of great matches, capping it off with a historic main event. Madison Square Garden housed 20,427 fans for the highly anticipated event with a gate of $17.7 million, which is a record for both the promotion and the venue. President Dana White said in his press conference that the pay-per-view record was broken last night.

Featherweight champion and new lightweight champion Conor McGregor took home Performance of the Night after he became the first fighter in promotional history to hold championships in two different divisions. McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez by TKO in the second round of the main event.

White has said repeatedly that McGregor needs drop one of the titles, if he wins. McGregor has hinted at press conferences that he will keep both titles. No decision has been made as to which title he will keep or he will be allowed to hold both titles.

Middleweight contender Yoel Romero, who also earned Performance of the Night, made a statement against former middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Romero’s flying knee knockout, immediately followed with punches, left a bloodied Weidman defeated early in the third round, giving Romero a huge win. With the win, Romero has built a strong case for himself as to why he deserves a shot at the middleweight championship against Michael Bisping.

The Fight of the Night went to Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson. The two duked it out in an epic fight for the welterweight title. Despite a little bit of confusion after the fight with the announcement, it was clarified that the fight ended in a draw by majority decision. Even though the fight ended in a draw, it could be a strong candidate for fight of the year.

Last night’s payoff of having the Octagon in New York was well worth the wait, and it is safe to say that the promotion will return to Madison Square Garden again soon.
