TJ Grant still not 100-percent, unclear on his return date

Published Nov. 20, 2013 6:22 p.m. ET

UFC lightweight contender TJ Grant has twice had to turn down title fights after suffering a concussion in training earlier this year, and the latest updates from the Canadian fighter aren't any more promising.

Grant has been out of action since suffering the injury prior to his scheduled bout against Benson Henderson in August, and the lingering effects of the concussion are still keeping him from returning to full training just yet.

As of right now, Grant is still not back to 100-percent according to a report via UFC Tonight, and he hasn't been able to confirm a return date yet for when he'll be able to get back in action.

The hope is for Grant to start light training to increase his heart rate and then hopefully by Christmas he'll be able to get back in the gym to start on his road back to the UFC.  Unfortunately, these are all estimates because Grant has previously stated he hoped to be back training by November, but that date has already come and gone.

Grant has heard all of the fighters on the UFC's lightweight roster calling him out for fights, but as of now he can't respond because he's not even sure when he'll get back in action and admittedly it's been frustrating.

The one assurance that Grant can give is that he plans to return to fighting, but when that happens remains a question for his doctors and his injured head.  While Grant is out, the lightweight division is moving forward although current champion Anthony Pettis is also on the shelf for the next seven or eight months after scheduling knee surgery.

Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson will battle it out in January in the headline bout of the UFC on FOX card in Chicago, while other names like Gilbert Melendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov continue to circle like vultures just waiting to pick the bones of any contender left standing.
