Nate Diaz calls out Conor McGregor for trilogy fight

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Conor McGregor believes Nate Diaz took so much damage in their second fight at UFC 202 that it would be in his best interest to leave it at 1-1.

Don’t expect Conor McGregor to challenge Nate Diaz again anytime soon.

McGregor walked with a majority decision win after 25 minutes of hard-fought action over Diaz at UFC 202, avenging his initial loss to the Stockton native at UFC 196 in March.

Almost immediately after this win, McGregor revealed the two would settle the score at lightweight in the near future. But these plans appear to have changed.

In recent a fan Q&A on Facebook, McGregor was asked about the potential rubber match with Diaz. In the video, the Irishman revealed while the possibility of a third fight between the two was certainly there, he believes Diaz took so much damage in their second bout that it would be in his best interest to leave it at 1-1.

“There was a lot of damage done to Nathan in that last fight,” McGregor said. “Even looking at his facial features, they are not the same so I know those close to him will understand what I’m talking about.

“There could be a potential fight maybe down the line for the lightweight belt after I win this. To see him to have to make the weight and then to see the damage he took the last fight and then come in at a much lower weight, it wouldn’t end good for him. I’d imagine and I’d probably hope that his people close to him would stop him from doing it. It’s done now, cash your money and bounce.”

Too bad Diaz didn’t get the memo.

Taking to Instagram, Diaz taunted his Irish rival foe with a picture of McGregor on crutches backstage after their most recent fight.

“I was ready for round three that night — were you?,” wrote Diaz.

However, Diaz isn’t likely to get his rematch at McGregor as UFC President Dana White has maintained a third fight was out of the picture.

“Everyone has to remember that fight was put together because Conor McGregor’s opponent fell out,” said White last month. “So Nate Diaz stepped up and took [the fight] on short notice. Conor stepped up and took the fight.

“It was such an exciting fight. They wanted to do it again so we did it again. But they’re not in the same weight class, the fight doesn’t make sense, it’s not for any titles, it’s not for any ranking positions. It makes no sense.”

Instead McGregor (20-3) will look to become the first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in two separate weight classes when he challenges lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 in New York City. Diaz, on the other hand, has yet to be booked in another fight.
