Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua undergoes shoulder surgery, expects early 2016 return
After 33 professional fights and being involved in some of the most damaging wars in MMA history, former world champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua would seem to be as old as a 33-year-old could possibly be. Though his talent and skill have never faded, his body has been broken down through many injuries.
The living MMA legend has lost four out of his last six fights and seven out of his last 12, going back to 2009.
Still, the warrior plans to fight on, and is even planning his next training camp, at Kings MMA, according to a report from Guilherme Cruz. A win in his last fight - against Antonio Rogerio "Minotouro" Nogueira in August - and a successful shoulder surgery this week are likely both big parts of why the Brazilian feels good about continuing his career.
"I had surgery on my right shoulder this past Sunday in Sao Paulo, with my orthopedist Dr. Daniel Delaquilla, and everything went well," Rua posted on his Facebook wall and on his Instagram account on Wednesday.
"I already did the 'post-surgery' appointment yesterday, Tuesday, and we are already taking care of my recovery to be back strong, 'good as new,' early next year."
Immediately after his UFC 190 decision win over Nogueira, Rua expressed interest in a rematch with fellow former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The two first faced off in Pride, back in 2005.
Rua won that fight via TKO, and went on to win the entire Pride middleweight (203 pounds) Grand Prix. When it becomes known how soon Rua will make his return to competition, we'll let you know.
