Jake Ellenberger greeted a USADA drug tester with a gun.
Jake Ellenberger was scheduled for a drug test and USADA decided 5:45 a.m. was a good time to knock on his door. Ellenberger didn’t think it was a good time, and answered the door with a gun.
Ellenberger (31-11 MMA, 10-7 UFC) is currently 15th in the UFC welterweight rankings. He recently defeated Matt Brown in just 1:46 in the first round by TKO at UFC 201. Ellenberger is scheduled to fight Jorge Masdival at the Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only time a fighter greeted a drug tester with a gun. UFC middleweight Tim Kennedy also pulled a gun out when he saw a suspicious car in his driveway. After receiving death threats from ISIS, Kennedy wasn’t taking a chance.
The UFC recently partnered with USADA to take care of the steroid problem in the sport. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) uses blood and urine tests to ensure athletes are clean of performance enhancing drugs.
USADA has extensive guidelines that athletes must follow while in the testing pool. One of the guidelines is that you can be tested at anytime without warning.
USADA has caught notable fighters like former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar for using banned substances.
Wanderlei Silva received a lifetime ban and a $70,000 fine from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for refusing to take a drug test. It is reported that USADA showed up at Silva’s gym and Silva ran out the backdoor.
Steroids and performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) are a known problem in sports today. Hopefully the UFC and USADA can control PED use in MMA without any casualties.
