Gonzaga crushes Jordan

Published Oct. 19, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Gabriel Gonzaga may best be known as a submission specialist but lately he's adding knockouts to his resume with his latest coming in the first round after a devastating right hand crushed Shawn Jordan's jaw at UFC 166.

It was less than three years ago that Gonzaga was considering retirement after losing back-to-back fights in the UFC and exiting the promotion, but he was able to reinvigorate his career and since returning to the Octagon he's picked up three wins in four fights.

Gonzaga put away Dave Herman in his last fight, but this time he faced former LSU football player Shawn Jordan, who is also known for carrying dynamite in both fists. It didn't seem to matter much to Gonzaga, who was willing to stand and exchange punches with the powerful Jordan.

Jordan uncorked a quick combination landing a jab straight to the mush, but Gonzaga timed it perfectly and came back over the top with a beautiful right hook that slammed into his opponent's jaw. Jordan crumbled to the mat and Gonzaga only needed to add a couple extra punches to finish the fight.

Gonzaga (16-7) has looked fantastic since returning to the UFC in early 2012 with his only loss coming by way of knockout to Travis Browne. With another knockout to his credit, Gonzaga could be staring at a top ten fight for his next bout in the UFC.
