Fabricio Werdum, Eddie Alvarez face possible six-month medical suspensions

Published Jun. 17, 2015 3:28 p.m. ET

Following a hard fought battle to claim the undisputed heavyweight championship at UFC 188, Fabricio Werdum might be looking at some required down time to allow his knee and thumb to heal.

Werdum defeated Cain Velasquez by second round guillotine choke to win the title, but didn't come out of the fight completely unscathed.

The UFC released a list of medical suspensions for the card held in Mexico City, Mexico last weekend with Werdum as one of the fighters facing the longest possible suspension.

Because there is no athletic governing body in Brazil, the UFC handles all sanctioning, drug tests and medical suspensions for the event.

Werdum is staring down a possible 180-day or six-month suspension unless he's cleared with an MRI of his right knee and right thumb as well as an x-ray for a possible nasal fracture.

Medical suspensions are precautionary, so if Werdum is cleared by his physician with the required paperwork he could return much sooner than six months from now.

Also on the list of suspensions was Eddie Alvarez, who fought three hard rounds with Gilbert Melendez before earning a close, split-decision victory.

Alvarez is also facing a potential six-month layoff unless he can get cleared by an Ophthalmologist after eating an elbow from Melendez in the first round that cracked the top 10 ranked lightweight and caused massive swelling just below his eye.
