Dodson vs. Montague join UFC 166
John Dodson will look to begin his road back to UFC flyweight championship contention when he gets his first post-title bout. Dodson will look to bounce back at UFC 166, when he takes on promotional newcomer Darrell Montague.
The fight was confirmed to FOX Sports by UFC officials.
Dodson (14-6) had stormed through his early days in the octagon, capturing season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter and winning his first three official matches, including two by knockout.
When he fought Demetrious Johnson at UFC On FOX 6, he appeared to be on his way to capturing the belt, capturing the first two rounds and knocking the champion down once in the process. Johnson, however, held on, regrouped and stormed back, out-landing Dodson 142-44 over the final three rounds to capture all three and take a gutsy unanimous decision victory.
In Montague, Dodson will be taking on a 25-year-old Californian who will be making his Octagon debut. The 5-foot-6 fighter will enter the bout on the strength of a four-fight win streak, and holds an overall record of 13-2 with five knockouts and five submissions.
At a time before the UFC launched its flyweight division, Montague was once considered the world’s top flyweight, before losing to Ian McCall in Aug. 2011. His only other career loss is to another UFC fighter, Robbie Peralta.
UFC 166 takes place on Oct. 19 at Houston’s Toyota Center, and boasts a main event pitting heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez against longtime rival Junior dos Santos.
