Did Rousimar Palhares do it again?
Rousimar Palhares has a reputation as one of the nastiest finishers in all of mixed martial arts when it comes to submissions.
His heel hook is akin to Anderson Silva's knee strikes or Mirko Cro Cop's left high kick, and it's just as dangerous when applied correctly. But just like a fighter who refuses to stop punching a downed opponent, Palhares has gotten a bad stain on his record for holding onto submissions well past when the referee has commanded to stop the fight.
The infractions got so bad that after his last fight against Mike Pierce, the UFC decided to release Palhares and deem him black balled from the organization following repeated incidents of the same kind.
It didn't take long for Palhares to get picked up by another organization and on Saturday he made his debut against Steve Carl in a welterweight title bout, and just like so many others before, the leg locks came fast and furiously in the opening round.
Palhares locked up an inverted heel hook, which is one of the most damaging submissions in all of MMA, and moments later Carl tapped out. Referee Yves Lavigne rushed in to make the stop, but did Palhares hold on for a moment too long yet again?
