Dana White: UFC signing Holly Holm and Gina Carano 'a matter of getting a deal done'
When last UFC president Dana White spoke about signing former women's pro boxing champion Holly Holm, he said the organization was no longer interested in signing her.
Now, White has changed his tune. Holm is back in play, he said Wednesday on FOX Sports 1's "UFC Tonight," lumping her in with Gina Carano as potential additions to the roster. Holm's manager Lenny Fresquez confirmed to FOX Sports that he is currently in negotiations with the UFC.
"Holly Holm and Gina Carano are all a matter of getting a deal done," White said.
Previously, White had said the UFC didn't want Holm, because she "hasn't fought anybody." White also referred to Fresquez as "a lunatic" to FOX Sports in December and then in March told UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani that he wasn't happy with how Fresquez was talking about Holm's potential deal with the UFC in the press.
Since then, Holm knocked out Juliana Werner in the third round at Legacy FC 30 on April 4 in her hometown of Albuquerque. She's 7-0 as a pro MMA fighter with six knockouts, but all of her fights have come against inferior competition. Holm, 32, is a former three-division boxing champion.
Fresquez told FOX Sports late last year that Holm wants to be in the UFC, but not without making more money than she would splitting time between boxing and MMA in other organizations. Fresquez said Holm makes between $30,000 and $40,000 per MMA fight and has been offered $250,000 for a boxing match. She would likely start out making less in the UFC.
When reached by text Wednesday night by FOX Sports, Fresquez said: "We are still in negotiations and do not want to speak about them until finalized."
White has already met with Carano and it seems like only a matter of time before she and the UFC come to terms on a deal. The former Strikeforce star and Hollywood actress will likely get an immediate title shot against women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, something both White and Rousey have endorsed.
Holm, on the other hand, will likely have to work her way up the ladder since she is not as big of a name.
