Dana White: GSP will not fight at UFC 206 in Toronto
UFC President Dana White puts the rumors to rest that GSP will be returning to the UFC at UFC 206 in Toronto, Canada.
After a three-year absence from the sport, Hall of Fame fighter Georges St. Pierre has been rumored to be making his way back to the UFC. According to UFC President Dana White, while he was a guest on Fox Sports Live with Jay and Dan on Thursday, that will not happen at UFC 206 in Toronto, Canada. White announced that he does not believe that GSP will make a return to fighting ever.
GSP has not fought since November of 2013 when he defeated Johny Hendricks and successfully defended the Welterweight title for the ninth time. A month following that win, GSP vacated the title to retire from the sport of mixed martial arts. Earlier this year rumors began that GSP was looking to make a return to the octagon and a possible run to regain the title. St. Pierre has entered USADA required testing and will be eligible to fight just in time for the home crowd at UFC 206.
Dana White put those rumors to rest when he said point blank “GSP will not be fighting in Toronto- No.” He went on to say “There is a certain mentality that you need to have to be a fighter, George St. Pierre has not had that mentality for a long time.”
GSP has not fought since the UFC joined Reebok in a sponsorship and some thought that could be what is deterring the former champ from returning. GSP has many sponsors outside the cage, one of the biggest being Under Armor, which is a direct competitor of Reebok. All fighters are able to keep outside sponsorship, but must not wear any during official UFC events, or fight week.
Although the interest is there from St. Pierre who has said several time in the past few months that he wants to make his return, and that he would like it to be in Canada, it appears it may have to wait until 2017 at least.
