Dana White: Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2 targeted for April

BY Damon Martin • February 3, 2016

The long-awaited rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones is officially set for April, although the date and location for the fight are still to be determined.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the fight to FOX Sports on Wednesday.

"It's probably going to happen in April," White said. "I don't have the date or the venue but April is looking like the month."

Rumors about the rematch between Jones and Cormier have been swirling for months with UFC 197 on April 23 as the most likely landing spot for the title fight.  The April 23 card was originally targeted for Madison Square Garden in New York, but the UFC's attempt to put on a show there was nixed after a judge denied their injunction against the current ban in the state against the sport.

Jones beat Cormier last January to defend his title but just three months later was stripped of the belt after being arrested on hit-and-run charges in New Mexico.

In Jones' absence, Cormier went on to defeat Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson in back-to-back fights to claim the vacant belt and defend it while the former champion was sorting out his legal issues.

Jones eventually pled guilty and was handed probation from a New Mexico judge before being reinstated to the UFC.

Now it appears Jones will get the chance to reclaim the title when he fights Cormier, with the date now looking like April.
