Could Jones and Cormier become friendly? Champ thinks so
In a recent UFC interview (above), light heavyweight champ Jon Jones acknowledges that not liking his next opponent Daniel Cormier adds some extra motivation to his training camp. The two meet Jan. 3 in Las Vegas in the main event of UFC 182, and there has been absolutely no love lost between the two men over the years.
"A lot of times when you get a fight that's personal it motivates the athletes," Jones said.
"No one wants to lose to someone you don't like."
That said, "Bones" also explained how, after fighting a man, you can develop a real respect for him. As such, he thinks it is possible that, after their UFC 182 headlining bout, both he and Cormier could develop a half-decent relationship with one another.
Maybe.
"I'm sure when I beat him he won't like me too much," Jones began.
"I could see me and Daniel having a respectful relationship after the bout. Our problems ... they really aren't that personal. They're actually kind of silly. After you fight a guy you definitely develop a certain amount of respect for him and bond with him. So yeah, I could see us not having problems after this fight."
