Charles Oliveira picks up 5th UFC submission defeating Andy Ogle
If Charles Oliveira is in a fight in the UFC against a competitor just outside of the top ten rankings, it's a safe bet he will win, he will submit his opponent and he will do so dominantly.
The theory was proven correct once again on Saturday night as Oliveira racked up his fifth submission win in the UFC when he put away former Ultimate Fighter competitor Andy Ogle with a triangle choke in the third round to kick off the UFC Fight Night card in Brazil.
From the opening moments of the fight, Oliveira brutalized Ogle with his jiu-jitsu game, taking the Brit to the ground and getting his back for the better part of the entire first round. Ogle was in survival mode over and over again as Oliviera threw a barrage of submissions at him.
The crafty Brazilian who has struggled in the past to make weight at 145 pounds paced himself throughout the fight even when transitioning from rear naked choke to D'arce choke to guillotine choke and Ogle was on guard just to stay alive through the first two rounds.
Finally with the time ticking away closer and closer to the end of the fight, Oliveira saw an opening to lock up a triangle choke and once he cemented his legs trapped around Ogle's arm and neck, there was no escaping the hold. Ogle was forced to tape out and Oliveira picks up the victory.
The win for Oliveira (17-4, 1 NC) puts him back on the winning track after two losses in a row, albeit to Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson who both sit atop the featherweight division rankings. Oliveira has feasted on non-top ten opponents throughout his UFC career, but at just 24 years of age he has plenty of room to grow into a serious contender within his next few fights.
The key to Oliveira's future is getting the signature win he needs over a top opponent at 145 pounds. The talent is there â now it's just a matter of Oliveira unleashing it in the right fight.
