7-time major winner Goolagong Cawley gets Australian honors
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley has been honored by the Australian government for the work her foundation does with indigenous youths.
Tennis Australia on Friday said Goolagong Cawley has been appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day honors list.
She will be presented with her award by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night before the Australian Open women's final.
Goolagong Cawley and her husband, Roger, run the Evonne Goolagong Foundation from their home north of Brisbane in Queensland state. It has provided nationwide programs for more than 20 years for indigenous youngsters to use tennis as a vehicle to promote health, education and employment.
Goolagong Cawley says: ''After I was fortunate enough to achieve my dreams on the court, I have done my best to, in turn, help young people achieve theirs.''
Ranked No. 1 in 1971 and 1976, Goolagong Cawley won 92 tournaments, including Wimbledon twice, the French Open once and the Australian Open four times.
