Wolfsburg extend winless streak with draw against Cologne

Wolfsburg disappointed for the second time in 2016 as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Cologne on Sunday.

Julian Draxler gave Dieter Hecking's men the lead, but Anthony Modeste earned the Goats a point and prevented the Wolves from moving into the top six.

Wolfsburg's home form alone has been sustaining their challenge for a place in Europe next season, with 20 of their 26 points coming in front of their own fans prior to kick-off on Sunday.

They did have an extra dimension to their game compared to the 3-2 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend too, but they were ultimately too wasteful in front of goal.

Draxler set up Max Kruse for a chance he should have taken, but Timo Horn managed to deflect his effort over the crossbar.

Another miss from Andre Schurrle early in the second half had some of the home fans wondering whether it was not going to be their day, and when Modeste had a header saved instinctively by Diego Benaglio, it began to seem like a draw would actually be a good result for the Wolves.

Luiz Gustavo went even closer at the other end, finding the left-hand upright with his deft touch to Sebastian Jung's cross.

Draxler then showed an even better touch to turn in Vieirinha's cross on the volley from close range, with the deadlock finally broken midway through the second half.

It was not going to be worth all three points, though, as Modeste was given too much time and space to curl an effort from the edge of the penalty area beyond the reach of Benaglio to earn Cologne a point less than 10 minutes later.
