West Ham moved off the bottom of the Premier League standings with a 1-0 win over London rivals Tottenham.

Frederic Piquionne scored the winner with a header from Mark Noble's corner in the 29th minute - his first league goal for his new club - but the Hammers were also indebted to Rob Green as they held on for their first league win of the campaign.

The England 'keeper, who has had a shaky start to the season after his World Cup blunder against the United States, had already saved well from Jermaine Jenas and Rafael van der Vaart when he made a stunning leap to push Luka Modric's volley onto the bar.

The Press Association reported that Green appeared to gesture towards the press box at the end of the game, perhaps a reaction to the criticism he has received since his mistake in England's 1-1 draw with the United States in South Africa.

''He is a good goalkeeper and it was a normal performance from him,'' West Ham manager Avram Grant said. ''It was a great save against Modric.

''I haven't seen any footballer who is good all the season. It does not matter what is in the papers he showed on the pitch that he is a very good goalkeeper. His performance today was the best speech. I like emotion in the game. I don't want to be a cold fish.''

In an entertaining encounter, Tom Huddlestone should have leveled for Tottenham in the second half, but after rounding Green, he somehow put his shot wide.

But Tottenham 'keeper Carlo Cudicini had to be at his best to prevent West Ham extending its lead, the Italian denying the lively Victor Obinna and Noble.

But one goal was enough in the end for West Ham to move above Everton and into 19th in the standings, and complete an encouraging week after the midweek League Cup win at Sunderland.

Tottenham, meanwhile, suffered its second league defeat of the season four days after it was beaten by north London rivals Arsenal in the League Cup.

For manager Harry Redknapp, it was also a first loss to his old club.

''It is the first time I've been beaten by the Super Hammers,'' Redknapp said. ''But I don't feel any worse losing to West Ham. I've had a great run coming back here.

''They started strong and their front two were a real handful. It was a great team effort from West Ham and it could have gone either way. It was an exciting game, end to end stuff. It was more of a basketball match. They attacked, we attacked...''

Redknapp may be more concerned by the mounting defensive crisis at the club, with a Champions League tie against FC Twente to come on Wednesday.

William Gallas tore a groin muscle in training on Friday, joining Ledley King, Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Benoit Assou Ekotto on the injury list.
