New Zealand's only professional football team has hired Scotland-born Ernie Merrick, one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Australian A-League, as its new manager.

Merrick coached the Melbourne Victory from 2005 to 2011 during which they won two A-League titles, two minor premierships and reached three grand finals. He was named A-League Coach of the Year in 2007 and 2010.

Merrick replaces New Zealand national coach Ricki Herbert, who coached the Phoenix from their formation in 2007 until this year when he stepped down after their last-place finish in the 10-team A-League.

The 60-year-old Merrick has just completed a two-year term as Hong Kong national coach.
