Veteran MLS Goalscorer is on His Way To Costa Rica

DC United forward Alvaro Saborio is rumored to be leaving the MLS and on his way back to his former side Saprissa in Costa Rica.
Last week, Black and Red United reported that DC United’s Alvaro Saborio has picked up the interests of Saprissa in Costa Rica. A month ago, Saborio hinted at a possible return to the Costa Rican side that he started his professional career with back in 2001. Saprissa’s president Juan Carlos Rojas said that there have been multiple informal negotiations between the two sides but now they are sitting down to have formal talks about the availability of the 34 year old striker leaving the MLS.
This deal seems to be pretty much in the books. Saborio has fallen down the depth chart after the acquisition and rise in form of Patrick Mullins as well as Ahaji Kamara’s return from injury. There is also the fact DC United just haven’t had to use him at all. Saborio hasn’t started a match since July 23rd and his last appearance was in the middle of August. With the amount of money that Saborio is making, it is a waste funds for him to be riding the bench for most of the season.
Saborio’s comeback to his first professional club would be celebrated by the La S fans everywhere. Saborio played for the Costa Rican side for 6 years, scoring 95 goals in 151 appearances. In his time with Saprissaa, Saborio won the league as well as the CONCACAF Champions League. That side also finished 3rd in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup behind São Paulo an Liverpool.
During his time in the MLS, Saborio played in 155 games and scored 71 goals. Most of those goals came from his time with Real Salt Lake, who he played 6 years with and scored 63 goals for.
Saborio’s move away from the MLS to his childhood club is probably the best move for him. Being so far down the pecking order for playing time and his age getting up there, finishing his career with his first professional club is the way to go.
