Toronto FC vs New York Red Bulls: Three Key Moments

Jozy Altidore’s late game heroics helped Toronto FC steal a point from the New York Red Bulls after a six goal affair ended in a 3-3 draw.

A thrilling finish between Toronto FC and the New York Red Bulls made TFC the first team to clinch a playoff spot in MLS this year This battle between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference didn’t disappoint. The six goal affair was one of the more exciting games to watch this season.

This was a back and forth match that saw multiple momentum swings until the final whistle. Jozy Altidore’s late heroics helped Toronto come away with a point after they were down two goals early in the second half. The Red Bulls will feel unlucky that they will be leaving with only a point as opposed to a full three after this one.

With the draw, Toronto FC clinched a playoff spot in the East. They are still in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 13W-8L-8D record (46 points). With the win, New York jumped to second place tied with NYCFC with 45 total points. They now have a 12W-9L-9D record on the season.

1. Fast Start for New York

The Red Bulls scored early with an own goal from Steven Beitashour in the 12′ minute. The rough start for TFC got worse in the 31′ minute when Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 19th goal of the season. At this point, it looked as though New York would run away with this one.

2. Toronto Get One Back Before the Half

Toronto’s captain, Michael Bradley, got his team back in the match when he scored his first goal of the season. His late run in the box led to his shot finding the back of the net in the 41′ minute. The score before the half gave TFC the momentum heading into the break.

3. Jozy Saves the Day

When BWP scored an early second half goal in the 48′ minute, it seemed as if the game was over for Toronto as they were struggling to score in this one. The 3-1 lead looked to be enough but Jozy Altidore was there to save the day. The 6’1 striker first scored in the 68′ minute on an amazing free kick to bring Toronto within one goal of New York. He then scored again in the 86′ minute when his shot took a deflection and fooled Luis Robles for Altidore’s eighth goal of the year.

Toronto FC will stay home for their next match against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, September 24th. The Red Bulls will return to New York to take on the Montreal Impact in their next game. That will also take place on Saturday, September 24th.
