Orlando City's Brek Shea undergoes hernia surgery, out indefinitely

Orlando City's pursuit of a MLS playoff berth in its inaugural season has suffered a setback.

Defender-midfielder Brek Shea will be sidelined indefinitely after undergoing sports hernia surgery, depriving Orlando of another key option out wide following winger Kevin Molino's torn ACL in May.

Although Orlando did not provide a time frame for Shea's recovery, the club said the 25-year-old is expected to return before the end of the season. The typical recovery following the surgery is four to six weeks.

Shea has been dealing with the nagging injury for a while, finally exiting in the first half of Orlando's 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on June 24 before sitting out two MLS matches. The injury also removed Shea from consideration for the U.S. national team's Gold Cup roster.

The 2011 MLS MVP finalist has started all 14 of his appearances for Orlando at left back or on the wing after returning from a two-year stint with Premier League side Stoke City.

Orlando (6-7-6) sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 15 matches remaining. In a move that provides cover for Shea's absence, the club acquired two-time All-Star left back Corey Ashe from the Houston Dynamo on Tuesday.
