Lyon draws with Tel Aviv at home
Lyon substitute Alexandre Lacazette scored an 88th-minute equalizer to earn the French side a 2-2 draw with Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The home side came second in Group B, while the draw cost Hapoel a place in the Europa League - which went instead to Benfica. The Portuguese club finished third despite losing 2-1 to group winner Schalke.
Lyon forward Lisandro Lopez opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, but Ben Sahar equalized for the Israeli team just a minute later.
Hapoel midfielder Eran Zahavi then scored with a stunning overhead strike in the 69th minute and his side were two minutes away from continuing their season in Europe before Lacazette leveled after being cleverly set up by Lopez.
Although coach Claude Puel's Lyon started well, with Lopez shooting wide after six minutes, Hapoel looked sharp.
"You're always at the mercy of your opponents when you don't take you chances," Puel said. "We came up against a very good goalkeeper, but we lacked a bit of spontaneity and aggression in front of goal."
Striker Itay Shechter just failed to convert a cross from the left in the 13th minute, and then hurt his right shoulder after falling heavily. He was replaced by Sahar midway through an even first half.
Lyon's Bosnia midfielder Miralem Pjanic had a shot saved by Vincent Enyeama, Nigeria's goalkeeper at this year's World Cup, and Hugo Lloris made a fine save at the other end in the 28th to keep out Toto Tamuz's rising shot.
Lyon struggled to get its passing game going, but always remained a threat on set pieces, with a header by Brazilian defender Cris being cleared off the line by Gil Vermouth.
After Pjanic's free kick sailed just over, Lyon went close again late in the first half when Jean II Makoun collected another back heel from Lopez and hit the post, with Enyeama beaten.
Enyeama, impressive during the World Cup group games, had to be at his best to tip over a curling effort from Makoun early in the second half, and he then leapt to thwart Bafetimbi Gomis as he chipped the ball.
"We played well in the first half but didn't take our chances," Lyon striker Jimmy Briand said. "We're disappointed because we wanted to offer our fans a win after two disappointing away games. We'll have to start taking our chances in the next round."
Lloris kept out a shot from Sahar in the 55th that was creeping inside his near post, while Enyeama's run of excellent saves ended with a clumsy error to gift Lopez a goal.
Instead of diving at the feet of Briand to capture a loose ball, he tried to kick it clear and passed it straight to Lopez for an easy finish into the bottom corner.
Lyon's lead evaporated when Sahar ran onto a pass that split the two center backs and finished easily past Lloris.
Zahavi made it 2-1 to the Israeli side with a superb strike. Salim Toama floated a cross that appeared to drift over Zahavi's shoulder, but he twisted his body and connected perfectly to send the ball flying past Lloris and into the right corner.
However, Lacazette earned his side a point with his late strike.
Some Lyon fans briefly fought with their own club stewards in one section of the stadium during the match.
