Italy's football league chief Maurizio Beretta is confident this weekend's planned Serie A strike will be avoided.

Beretta held talks with the players' union (AIC) representatives in Rome on Tuesday to discuss the renewal of the collective bargaining agreement, which expired in June.

Previous failed attempts led to the AIC last week announcing that no Serie A games would be played this weekend in protest against the Italian league.

After a seven-hour meeting, Beretta said: "We are one step away from reaching an agreement for the new collective contract.

"It has been a very positive meeting and I think it's very likely that the strike will be called off.

"Finally, we have tackled the issues and we are in agreement on six points.

"The seventh point, that in relation to players out of squad, we are still trying to find a solution that does not give way to discrimination and that also previews punishments in case it is violated."

The main points of conflict in the past has been the Lega's proposal in relation to forced transfers and squad exclusions.
