Jagielka: We must share goals
The England defender popped up with only his third goal in four years to get the Toffees back on track as they came from behind to beat Wigan 3-1 at Goodison Park. Everton began the match without a recognised striker with midfielder Tim Cahill filling the role as loan signing Denis Stracqualursi is not match fit and Louis Saha was not even in the squad. It looked like that may cost them as despite Jagielka's close-range header in the first half 97 seconds after Franco di Santo had given the visitors the lead they failed to press home their advantage. However, with six minutes remaining substitute Apostolos Vellios nodded in Tony Hibbert's cross and Royston Drente added the third deep into injury time, with both players registering their first goals for the club. The result doubled Everton's Premier League goal tally for the season, having managed just three in their previous three matches. They have had six different goalscorers - Leon Osman, Leighton Baines, Jagielka, Vellios, Drenthe, and the now-departed Mikel Arteta - and Jagielka believes it is important everyone chips in. "We all play a part not only scoring goals but defensively," said the centre-back. "We're a team from front to back and that is the way we will be to the end of season. "We have never relied on one person. Tim got nine and Jermaine Beckford (now at Leicester) got 10 and the two or three others got to three or four. "I am sure the gaffer wold love five or six of us on five-plus and a couple of other ones in double figures. "I'm sure he will address that but we are only four games in and the goalscoring is not too bad at the moment." On his rare strike Jagielka added: "It was a quite simple goal. Tim jumped about five foot in the air and thankfully it came back off the bar and straight to my head. "We will try to build on that, we know we have to help the strikers out with the goals. "It (his lack of goals) is a little bit embarrasing. It is something I will try to address, although I've not had that many chances. "We have changed things around with set-pieces this year and I feel more confident every time I have come up that if I am not going to get a chance someone else will." With their first home win of the season Everton made it three matches unbeaten since their opening defeat to newcomers QPR at Goodison Park. The defeat capped a difficult week for Wigan who lost 3-0 at Manchester City last weekend and crashed out of the Carling Cup to npower Championship side Crystal Palace on Tuesday. However, the misery was compounded by an injury to Hugo Rodallega in the 90th minute which manager Roberto Martinez believes is a ruptured medial ligament in the striker's right knee. The Colombia international, who scored 10 and nine in his last two seasons, could be out for a minimum of three months. "That is a real negative for us because he looked sharp," said Martinez. "Since he came back from the Copa America it took time for him to get back to his level but he looked back to his best against Everton. "In our football club any player who is not available is a real blow. "We had Steve Gohouri, Emmerson Boyce and Antolin Alcaraz missing and that makes a big hole in the squad. "Then when you lose someone with the experience of Hugo, who has been averaging about 10 goals a season, that is a real blow. "In football those things happen, that is why we have a squad and it will be an opportunity for someone else. "But it is a real blow for our club to lose someone of the status of Hugo."
