Tottenham are stepping up their attempt to sign striker Leandro Damiao from Internacional.

The Brazilian club's president Giovanni Luigi said they have rejected a $17million bid, believed to be from Spurs, for the towering frontman, who made his international debut against Scotland in March.

"It was the first concrete proposal that we had,'' Luigi told Brazilian newspaper Correio do Povo.

"I said I didn't want to sell now, but I think they will come back with another attempt. I warned that he'll only leave at the end of the year and for more money.''

Tottenham have a partnership with Internacional which helped them secure the signing of Brazil midfielder Sandro last year.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is keen to add a striker to his squad following the poor form of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko last season.
