Huddersfield beats Wolves for 1st league win in 3 months

HUDDERSFIELD, England (AP) — Steve Mounie scored an injury-time winner to give last-place Huddersfield a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Tuesday and a glimmer of hope in its seemingly hopeless battle against relegation.

Mounie forced home a rebound in the first minute of added time to secure the team's first league win in three months, and only the third of the season.

It could be too little, too late for Huddersfield, though, which had only taken one point from its previous 14 matches and is rooted to the bottom of the standings with just 14 points, 11 points from safety with 10 games to play.

This was the team's first win under new manager Jan Siewert, and the first since they played at Wolves on Nov. 25.

"I know that it won't be easy, but we'll keep on fighting," Siewert said. "Let me calculate. Ten more games. There's still a chance."

The game had few clear-cut chances but Wolves defender Matt Doherty missed an opening in the first half when he was left unmarked by the far post to meet a cross, but mis-kicked his attempt on goal.

Mounie had a shot blocked by Willy Boly after the re-start and Jon Stankovic's header from the subsequent corner was saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Mounie then headed wide from Bacuna's lofted pass, while Wolves did not threaten again until the 66th minute when Boly's header cleared the crossbar.

The game looked headed for a scoreless draw when Karlan Grant's volley rebounded off Patricio and Mounie turned the ball home from close range.
