Schalke is set to sign former Germany goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, with its No.1 Ralf Faehrmann facing a lenghty injury layoff.

Schalke says Hildebrand is expected to sign a contract after completing a medical exam.

Faehrmann tore ligaments in his left knee in last week's 2-1 loss to Kaiserslautern.

His backup Lars Unnerstall played in the 5-0 Europa League win in Larnaka. Hildebrand was out of contract after a season with Sporting Lisbon. He has also played for Stuttgart, Valencia and Hoffenheim and was Germany's third-choice keeper at the 2006 World Cup.
