Hangeland salvages 1-1 draw for Fulham vs Villa
Fulham defender Brede Hangeland headed in a last-gasp equalizer Saturday to give his team a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Marc Albrighton had given the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute when he latched on to a crossfield pass from Barry Bannan before cutting inside Carlos Salcido and finishing with a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Fulham wasted a number of chances until the tall Hangeland rose highest to meet a free kick from Danny Murphy and head in with just seconds left of injury time.
Villa captain Nigel Reo-Coker was taken off with an injury in the 33rd.
The visitors should have opened the scoring in the first minute when Albrighton put Stewart Downing in the clear, but he delayed his shot and Carlos Salcido cleared the danger. Fulham responded immediately with a cross from Simon Davies that was headed straight into the hands of Brad Friedel by Zoltan Gera.
A dangerous cross from Downing in the 10th minute caused Mark Schwarzer to punch the ball clear for a throw-in but both sides were largely entrenched in midfield.
Davies put Clint Dempsey clear in the 18th but the American's angled drive was saved by Friedel's outstretched foot.
Andrew Johnson came on in the 59th for his second appearance since missing 13 months with injuries. He brought a good save from Friedel in the 74th when he burst into the penalty area and drilled a low angled shot toward the bottom corner. The Fulham striker should have leveled in the 81st when he was alone with Friedel, but the Villa keeper dived to his right to thwart him.
