Gremio moved second in the Campeonato Brasileiro table with a 3-1 win at Sport Recife.
Anderson Pico opened the scoring just before the break, Leandro doubled the lead six minutes into the second half and Marquinhos made it 3-0 five minutes later.
Hugo pulled one back 10 minutes from the end from the penalty spot, but it was not enough to stop Gremio leapfrogging Atletico Mineiro, who have won just one of their last five games, by virtue of having more victories.
Deivid scored the only goal with an 89th-minute penalty as Coritiba won 1-0 at Palmeiras.
