Godoy Cruz gets Copa Libertadores berth
Godoy Cruz clinched a spot in next season's Copa Libertadores by winning 2-0 on Monday against Atletico Rafaela on the final day of the Argentine Apertura championship.
Boca Juniors had already claimed the Apertura title a week ago, leaving other teams to fight for minor positions on the final day.
Godoy Cruz, a club from the western city of Mendoza, is Argenina's fifth team in next year's Copa Libertadores, joining Boca Juniors, Velez Sarsfield, Arsenal and Lanus.
Ariel Rojas scored for Godoy Cruz with a 40th-minute header and Ruben Ramirez added the second in the 72nd.
In other matches Monday to wrap up the Apertura season, Colon defeated Banfield 4-1, Lanus and Newell's Old Boys drew 2-2, Velez defeated Racing 1-0, Independiente beat Tigre 2-1, and San Martin won 1-0 over San Lorenzo.
Boca wrapped up a near-perfect season on Sunday, finishing unbeaten in 19 games with a 1-0 victory over All Boys. Dario Cvitanich scored in the 33rd minute for Boca, which won 12 matches, drew seven and allowed only six goals.
Boca finished with 43 points followed by a large margin by Racing, Belgrano, Colon and Velez - all with 31.
''Surely this team will go down in history as the undefeated champions and a club that has set other records,'' Boca defender Rolando Schiavi said.
In other results on Sunday: Argentinos Juniors 1, Olimpo 0; Belgrano 1, Arsenal 0; Estudiantes 2, Union 0.
