Gerrard, who has been on the comeback trail after six months out with a groin problem, suffered a cut on his ankle in training last week. He travelled to the Midlands ahead of Saturday's game with West Brom but the injury became infected and he was forced to return to Merseyside. The 31-year-old midfielder was photographed leaving hospital on crutches on Sunday and must be doubtful for England's upcoming matches with Spain and Sweden, and key Premier League encounters with Chelsea and Manchester City which follow. Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish said after the win over West Brom: "Will Steven be fit for England v Spain? I haven't got a clue. "It's nothing to do with any injuries before, it's an infection. He was in our minds for the game and it just flared up. I suppose it's like having an abscess on your mouth."
