A last-gasp penalty from Fred earned third-placed Fluminense a 2-1 win at Ponte Preta on Sunday in the Brazilian Campeonato.

Luiz Antonio Ferron looked to have salvaged a point for the hosts in the 84th minute when he cancelled out Thiago Neves' opener, which had put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time.

But Fred had other ideas and coolly converted from the spot in the 90th minute after Wellington Nem had been fouled by Ferron.

The result moved unbeaten Fluminense within three points of leaders Atletico Mineiro after 11 games.

Also on Sunday, Marcelo Moreno netted the game's only goal four minutes after the interval to give fourth-spotted Gremio a 1-0 triumph at Botafogo.

Cruzeiro remained a point further adrift in fifth after Borges' goal just before half-time secured them a 1-0 home success over Flamengo.

Sao Paulo stayed sixth after winning 2-0 at 10-man Figueirense thanks to goals in the first and last minutes. Ademilson provided the visitors with the perfect start and Willian Jose made the result safe following the 70th-minute dismissal of defender Fred.

Internacional leapfrogged Botafogo, taking over seventh spot thanks to a 4-1 triumph against bottom club Atletico Goianiense.

Renie equalised for Atletico soon after Elton had given Inter a 20th-minute lead, but it was only a temporary reprieve as the visitors assumed control in the second period. Dagoberto, Jaja and Fred were on the scoresheet to seal the rout.

Coritiba battled from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bahia, goals from substitute Everton Costa and Emerson in the space of five minutes midway through the second half grabbing the point after Rodrigo Souza and Alessandro had put the second-bottom team in the ascendancy.

Finally, Manoel Obina, Mazinho and Marcio Araujo were on target for Palmeiras as they clinched their second win of the season - 3-0 against Nautico Recife.
