Former Bayern president Hoeness released from prison
MUNICH --
Former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been released from prison after serving half of a 3-1/2 year sentence for tax evasion.
The Bavarian justice ministry said Hoeness was freed Monday, news agency dpa reported. It gave no further details. Hoeness will be on probation for the next three years.
The former Germany and Bayern star was convicted two years ago of evading millions of euros in tax through an undeclared bank account and stepped down as Bayern president. He began serving his sentence June 2, 2014.
Over the past year, he has benefited from a work-release program under which he worked in Bayern's youth department during the day before returning to prison overnight. He has spent weekends at home and was cleared for early release last month.
