England winger Stewart Downing was reportedly arrested on suspicion of assault early Sunday at a pub in northeast England.
The Liverpool player was held along with a 32-year-old woman after officers were called to a venue in Yarm at around 1 a.m.
In response to media reports about Downing's arrest, Cleveland Police confirmed that ''a 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.'' Downing is 27.
Both Downing and the woman, who was also arrested on suspicion of assault, were released on Sunday night on police bail pending further inquries into the incident.
Yarm is a popular night spot for footballers near Middlesbrough, where Downing played before joining Aston Villa in 2009. He joined Liverpool in the offseason for around $30 million.
Liverpool said it would not be commenting.
