Andre Villas-Boas made a winning start as Chelsea manager on Saturday, guiding his team to a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in a preseason friendly after an own goal from former Blues defender Tal Ben Haim.

Ben Haim headed into his own net in the seventh minute at Fratton Park after the ball was redirected into his path when Fernando Torres' cross was deflected by a Portsmouth defender.

Chelsea goalkeeper Hilario fouled Luke Varney in the box after the break, but the Portuguese's outstretched hand down low to his left saved the ensuing spot kick from Varney.

Villas-Boas played completely different teams in each half.
