Beckenbauer hails star duo
Franz Beckenbauer is delighted to see Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben back in action and feels the rest of the Bayern Munich team is benefiting.
The pair took to the field together for the first time this season in Saturday's 4-0 win over Hoffenheim and have been the talk of the Bundesliga in the since.
But while they stole the headlines, honorary president Beckenbauer insists the rest of the Bayern team is not unhappy to be left in the shade.
"There is no element of jealousy since the other players are actually benefiting from them," he said.
"It was the same with me and Gerd Muller. Gerd scored all of the goals, but we ensured he was able to.
"I don't know of anybody not wishing somebody success or all the headlines. Everybody should be happy that they are here.
"The whole team is playing well, and successfully. Thanks to Robben and Ribery, somebody like Thomas Muller or Bastian Schweinsteiger also thrives."
And Beckenbauer recognises that, without the two wingers, Bayern are simply not the same.
"If you want to reach a certain level of class, then you need players like them," he told the Tz newspaper.
"The Lionel Messis and the Cristiano Ronaldos also make the difference, and Robben and Ribery are in the same category.
"They turn a good team into a very good one.
"All top clubs are dependent on individuals of this calibre and that is nothing to be ashamed of.
"Robben is absolutely world class - one of the best players around - but I would not rate Robben higher than Ribery, they are both on the same level and are both in this category."
