Arsenal: Antoine Griezmann Easily Trumps Karim Benzema

Arsenal’s talk over new striker prospects will never end, and now we have a debate – Karim Benzema or Antoine Griezmann? Don’t make me laugh.

Arsenal‘s rumored hunt for a new, world class striker will not expire until Wenger actually buys or uncovers a world class striker. I will skip over my belief that Donyell Malen will be that world class striker and instead entertain the prospect that there are overpriced goal-poachers out there that Wenger would spend money on.

As of right now, there are two, so they tell us. Two, as in, two overpriced strikers that Arsenal will probably never have but will continuously be linked to.

Those two are the blackmail kingpin Karim Benzema and Giroud’s favorite sidekick, Antoine Griezmann. So let’s entertain the possibility that Wenger has to choose between one of the two.

Both clearly have a track record that would qualify them as ‘world class’ but there is only option between the two and that option is Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann may not have the statistical superiority that Benzema does, but he is younger and he is the blade of the Atletico Madrid attack, an attack that does not boast the same weapons as their capital-dwelling step brothers.

Griezmann can be a focal point, a supporting cast, a creator and a finisher. His versatility shines far and away above Benzema’s, who is a striker through and through, nothing more.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The only argument I could field in favor of Benzema is the opinion that the Gunners already have a Griezmann-type striker in Alexis, whereas we don’t have a true, class finisher like Benzema. You could even say that Arsenal has Lucas, Danny Welbeck and Alexis all in the same category as Griezmann. Same category doesn’t mean same quality, but still.

That single argument does not hold a light to the positives of bringing Griezmann around and the innumerable qualities he brings.

Quite frankly, I’m not sure who I would prefer over Griezmann. Perhaps Robert Lewandowski, but even then, he does not bring as much as Griezmann does. It would be nice to have him continue on that hold-up play that Giroud made work in North London, but if we are moving away from that style, then so be it.

Plus, let’s take Griezmann, as his blackmail account has yet to be opened, whereas that episode from Benzema is sketchy in every sense of the word. Keep that kind of behavior away from my Gunners.
