A quick glance at Tennessees 2011 football schedule is enough to frighten any Volunteers fan.
How about a seven-game stretch to open the season of North Texas (OK, thats a gimme), Cincinnati, at Florida, at North Carolina, Georgia, LSU and at Alabama. Ouch. Well, take heart, Vols, it looks like its about to get a bit easier.
Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton said Monday that he is on the verge of buying out the contract with North Carolina and canceling that two-game series. The Vols were to play the Tar Heels in 2011 and 2012.
Tennessee is likely to replace the North Carolina game with Buffalo in 2011, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Hamilton told the newspaper he wanted to simply postpone the UNC series in order to lighten the football teams load in 2011, but, when that didnt work, he began to work on a deal to cancel it. Vols will have to pay an as-yet-unannounced sum to get out of the contract.
