The Minnesota Twins experienced their first review of the regular season under Major League Baseball's new rules in Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox -- and the review went in the Twins' favor.
Minnesota right fielder Oswaldo Arcia hit a fly ball to Chicago center fielder Adam Eaton for what appeared to be the first out of the top of the seventh inning. But as Eaton went to transfer the ball from his glove to his left hand, the ball slipped out and fell to the ground. It was initially ruled a catch, which drew Twins manager Ron Gardenhire from his dugout.
Since the play occurred in the seventh inning, it was not able to be challenged by Gardenhire as replays after the sixth inning are initiated by umpires. Still, Gardenhire slowly walked to third base umpire and crew chief Dale Scott to encourage the umpires to take a look at it. After a lengthy review of several minutes, it was ruled that Arcia was safe as Eaton did not make the catch.
The error by Eaton took place during a three-run seventh inning for the Twins, who came back to take a 5-3 lead in the inning after trailing 3-2. As Arcia took first on the play, third baseman Trevor Plouffe was placed at second. However, the overturned call didn't result in any more runs for Minnesota in the inning. Plouffe was thrown out at the plate on a base hit by Aaron Hicks, and Arcia was stranded on the bases after Pedro Florimon struck out to end the Twins' threat.
